Have you tried having a class meeting and it flopped? At first, so did we. But we kept trying because we wanted to find a way to guide our 4th-8th grade students’ higher thinking skills of self-control, active listening, conflict resolution, respect, responsibility, assertion, cooperation, and empathy. We found success by teaching our students how to work together through consensus and active listening, so that they would be ready to move into high school as empowered and socially dynamic teens.
In this 7-page guide we share what we learned through experience and more intensive study of weekly class meeting or Civics period best practices. We are excited to share these ideas with you. Included in this program, you will find a suggested class meeting structure and five focus topics with specific activities that our students loved to help lead.
Topics are:
- Building Trust
- Setting Goals
- Working Together
- Brainstorming Values
- Problem-Solving Class Issues.
- For each topic we share specific Guidance
